Bittnia is so funny and incredibly smart. She starts off by talking about how she finds straight dating norms fascinating as it's a world she is not a part of, and she applies a humorous Black feminist lense to both the show and online discourse. She reviews old seasons, contrasts the US and UK seasons and their relationships with race. She also includes the not only the show and cultural contexts, but also an analysis of the audience and how that interacts with media-- which is something unique to the age of social media, and something that I think needs more exploring :)
This video addresses moral impurity and our relationships with it on the internet and cancel culture. I am not a big Selena Gomez fan and even less interested in Hailey Bieber's life, but I do find this online beef created by, mostly, hoards of people online. I've loosely followed the online discourse about how apparently Hailey copies Selena all the time, and looking at the evidence, I've been like "oh okay yeah she looks like she's copying her and that's weird" and while I didn't participate in this discourse besides watching a few videos, maybe like a couple, but I def internalized "team selena" and if anyone in person where to ask me about it, I'd just report on what I've seen online and express that I was team selena. But this video engages in the conversation further and challenges me to not chose a side. As I internalize the moral purity of this online discourse, and so many other online discourses, I've applied moral purity to other areas of my life, and I'm glad that this video brought this to my awareness. In interrogating public shame, she questions why people get death threats for being mean.
Dasia talks about how Eminem was a mirror and a voice for class marginalized white americans. She speaks of how the internet has flatten white subcultures like, punk, that "acted like speed bumps that slowed down the mainstream just enough to remind it that not everyone fits the same mold". MAGA has filled the hole that alternative white culture has left. For white people, MAGA is hijacking rebellion, hijacking the history of rebellion, and hijacking the cultural narrative of rebellion.
